Do a Good Deed Contest (June-November 2007)
Dr. Specht will be awarding a computer in November 2007 to a local Santa Maria youth who participated in the national Do A Good Deed Contest. The contest has been organized through doctors affiliated with DoctorRelation.com, an Internet search engine for doctors with the purpose of improving doctor-patient relations.
The contest encourages youth up to 18 years of age to do a good deed and then write an essay detailing what they did, what motivated them to do it and what they got out of the process. The essays must be submitted from June 2007 to October 2007 to Dr. Specht and his staff, where they are reviewed and a winner chosen.
Applying the ideal that "doctors heal people, but people heal the world," Dr. Specht is implementing the contest in order to help motivate the young people to become active in their communities and, in turn, instill in them positive qualities like innovativeness, self-motivation, self-esteem and a desire to help others.
"In today's world it is important that we acknowledge young people's good deeds," Dr. Specht stated. "It is not true as portrayed frequently in the news that only bad things are happening. By focusing on what is good, we can get a different perspective of our society and encourage ourselves and the younger generation to do more good deeds."
